BLOOD BROTHERS TICKETS
Hailed as one of the greatest musicals of all time, Willy Russell's masterpiece- Blood Brothers at the Phoenix Theatre is a powerful and gripping stage show set in Mersyside. Blood Brothers deals with the impact of social class on the lives of a single mother and her twin boys - Eddie and Mickey - during the 60s and 70s in Liverpool. For the audience it is an emotionally intense rollorcoaster of a show taking us to both sides of the class divide bringing home the futility of the class struggle.
Blood Brothers opens on a dark side street in Liverpool as two motionless figures are stretchered out of sight to the haunting sound of Mrs Johnstone singing"Tell me it's not true, say it's just a story,". the story then goes back 25 years into the past - and unfolds as to how we came to arrive at this tragic and bewildering moment.Mrs Johnstone is a poor single mother and is pregnant again struggling to cope with the children she already has from a previous relationship. To make ends meet she takes a cleaning job for the wealthy Mrs Lyons. Mrs Johnstone discovers that she is expecting twins and confides in Mrs Lyons telling her that she could just about cope with one more child, but two more would sink her. Mrs Lyons comes up with a solution and suggests that as she is herself unable to have children and to ease the finantial burden Mrs Johnstone could give her one of the twins to look after as her own. The deal is struck and the superstitious Mrs Johnstone swears on the Bible to give Mrs Lyons one of the twins which she duly does when they are born - but wishes she had not agreed to the pact. Mrs Lyons makes Mrs Johnstone keep her end of the bargain by playing on her superstitions and telling her that the two boys must never know the truth, as long as they live otherwise they will both drop dead. The scene is now set as the two boys - Mickey and Eddie - grow up in two completely different environments never knowing one another until they suddenly meet by chance and strike up an unlikely friendship Mikey and Eddie then make a pact to be blood brothers, with neither boy being aware of the others true identity. As they get older and their lives develop and evolve their paths diverge even further. Mickey goes to prison while Eddie goes to university and wins the affection of the girl Mickey had fallen in love with. The story comes to a gripping climax when Mickey confronts Eddie with a gun. He laments about the different paths their lives have taken, and that even though they are blood brothers, Eddie seemed to have ended up with everything while Mickey had nothing. In the final dramatic scene Mrs Johnstone reveals the truth to both of them in an attempt to make Mickey put down the gun, but Mickey accidentally hits the trigger and shoots Eddie dead prompting the police to shoot Mickey bringing truth to Mrs Lyon's prophecy.
